A journal documenting the life and work of American merchant, Quaker preacher and early abolitionist, John Woolman. Based in Mount Holly, New Jersey, Woolman travelled through America to preach Quaker beliefs and to advocate against slavery and other injustices present in America during that period. This journal presents Woolman's life and experiences on his travels, notably discussing anti-slavery and anti-materialism ideas, as well as corruption in society and the divine power of God. This work is one of the longest continuously published books in North America, never being out of print since its initial publication. Bound in full calf. No. 1 on the lower left corner of the title page. 23 pp. A primarily firsthand account of the life of John Woolman, with third person commentary interspersed throughout. Woolman primarily reflects on his spiritual journey in life, discussing his 'wanton-ness' in his early life, including killing a robin and her young, and his evolution of principles through his encounters with enslaved people and slavery. This includes his rejection of slavery and distaste for the mistreatment of enslaved people and of slaveholding in general. He also discusses his opinion of drinking, etc. John Woolman was an itinerant Quaker preacher (among other occupations, being an early abolitionist and advocating for the freedom of enslaved people. His work eventually led to the Quakers abandoning slave-holding and taking an abolitionist stance on religious grounds. GOOD condition. Minor toning and foxing. Good .
